Epidemiology

Epidemiology of a disease means the study and research of the disease to make sure that the statistics, the outbreak of the disease, the factors leading to it, and other pertinent concerns are studied and analyzed carefully.

That is the reason why scientists and researchers are doing the epidemiology of leukemia very carefully. Some factors they have found out that might just be the reasons as to why leukaemia runs through some families and some do not have cases of leukaemia for many generations. That is because leukaemia is genetic and it can be transferred from one generation to another because there is some particular factor not present in the DNA.

That is what makes the disease appear after a person has reached his 45th year, and that is because the genetic makeup of his body is quite incapable of producing some protein, which can prevent leukaemia.

One has to understand that they are many environmental factors that can also cause leukaemia. Out of these, smoking and exposure to radiation as well as benzene are quite common reasons for the outbursts of leukaemia. Radiation has the capacity of changing the functions of any sort of cells, which are exposed to the harmful rays. Moreover, prolonged radiation means that the cells do not have any day of protecting themselves from such a powerful onslaught of heat and energy. That is why their functions start mutating and changing into something different. That is the reason why exposure to radiation can cause acute leukaemia when the cells start multiplying very fast and quite abnormally.
