Leukaemia is a terrible disease that affects children as well as adults, and is a blood cancer in which the cells of the blood start functioning abnormally. Because there is a lessening of normal blood cells, because the cells, which had to produce them, have been destroyed into a useless cancerous cell, the body is open to infection risks. Leukaemia normally occurs in the white blood cells, which are the major components of the immunity system of a body. When these white blood cells start functioning in an abnormal manner and start multiplying in huge amounts, which is the time when the body starts developing the symptoms of cancer.
The treatment of cancer can be done by chemotherapy in which drugs are given to the body so that all the dangerous cells are killed off. Exposure to radiation can create a cancer but on the other hand, regulated exposure to the same type of radiation can destroy all the harmful blood cells and save the patient if the disease is caught in its early stages. Radiation is often the last option because it destroys all the red blood marrow cells.
Chemotherapy is the first option that doctors suggest to treat leukaemia. Many organizations are telling people about leukaemia, but it is necessary that other organizations do more about educating the public about the reasons for leukaemia. Information should also be given about its treatment, how to prevent it (do not expose yourself to radiation and benzene,) and other pertinent and necessary information about this disease.
This information and advice are a standard set of guidelines for the patients and the carers of children suffering with Leukaemia.
